Administration officials confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, following through on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official procedure for letting employees go.

Although Vought provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be ended soon.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our leaders in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
