Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has defended its safety measures, amid debate over proposals to make redundant a large number of safety staff in the UK. TikTok is planning to reduce a significant number of roles in its trust and safety team in its British office, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists raising concerns that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A senior executive explained that people-led review would continue to be important, but automated tools can safeguard staff by removing the most graphic content ahead of it has to be seen by people. The platform stated a 76% decrease in shocking and graphic content reviewed by safety staff over the previous year due to reliance on its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to combine people and machines to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s very important to reduce exposure to dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is why a significant AI assistance is proving valuable work at speed.”
