At least 13 passengers perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the national leader.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
